While it’s natural to think about Spring when you picture flowers blooming, there are are several types of popular fall flowers that bloom in orange, purple and other colors.  

Alyssum

Allysum is an annual plant that will carpet your garden with a sweet smelling violet, white, or colored flowers.

  • Full or partial sun
  • Will attract butterflies and deer resistant
  • Well-drained soil
  • Keep them well watered in high heat

 

Balloon Flower

The Balloon flower will swell up before they open and resemble small hot air balloons. When they do open they and resemble the bellflower.

  • Full sun to partial shade
  • Well-drained and slightly acidic soil
  • They can tolerate dry conditions but they really need plenty of moisture
  • They can attract slugs and snails
  • In the fall add a layer of mulch to protect them in winter

 

Beautyberry

Beautyberries also are known as “Callicarpa” which stands for beautiful fruit.

  • Plant in full to partial sun
  • Rich and moist soil
  • Asian beautyberry are cold weather resistant so they make the perfect fall plant

 

Chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemums come in many colors and will bring beauty to your garden this fall.

  • Try and have five or more hours of direct sun each day
  • Well-drained soil
  • Water them once a week with about 1 inch of water

 

Colchicum

When your summer garden starts to fade the Colchium will shine through. This is when the cup-shaped flowers will start to unfurl.

  • Partial sun and partial shade
  • Rich and well-drained soil
  • They are drought tolerant and deer resistant

 

Goldenrod

The Goldenrod is topped with fluffy yellow flowers and actually, sometimes are considered a weed. But these plants can provide shelter to beneficial insects and larvae and even attract butterflies to your garden.

  • They require only a little water and are drought tolerant

The Helenium is a perennial that will bloom from late summer into the fall.

  • Full sun
  • Sow them indoors for 8-10 weeks before you plant them outside in the early spring or plant directly outside in early spring or autumn.
  • Well-drained and rich soil
  • You may need to stake tall ones if your garden is in a windy area

 

Japanese Anemones

  • Part sun and partial shade
  • Well-drained and moist soil
  • Fertilize them in the springtime with organic plant food and compost

 

Monkshood

Monkshood is a tall plant that will bloom in the late summertime into fall. Please be warned that this plant is poisonous if ingested or if its sap comes in contact with any mucous membrane. Always wash your hands after handling this flower.

  • Moist soil
  • The soil pH should be neutral to slightly acidic but can handle rich, moist, and well-draining soil

 

Ornamental Peppers

Ornamental peppers can make a wonderful addition to your garden but be careful these bad boys are extra spicy.

  • Full sun (around 8 hours of sunlight a day)
  • Rich and well-drained soil
  • Water often to keep the soil evenly moist
  • Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings
  • Fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer when starting to grow
